Spring and fall are both strong windows. Spring planting, once the ground has dried and warmed enough to work comfortably, gives shrubs a full growing season to establish before winter. Fall planting works particularly well for deciduous shrubs, which can put energy into root development rather than supporting foliage through summer heat. We plant through most of the growing season with appropriate aftercare in place.

Zone hardiness is the baseline, but site-specific factors matter as much. Soil drainage, wind exposure, proximity to salt-treated surfaces, light conditions, and available space at maturity all affect which shrubs will perform well at a given location. We work through those variables for every project rather than relying on zone rating alone.

Our shrub installation process includes site assessment, species selection suited to the conditions, hole preparation to the correct dimensions, soil amendment where needed, installation at the proper depth, and mulching around the base with appropriate clearance from stems. We also provide guidance on establishment watering and initial care before we leave the site.

When shrubs have died, we look at what caused the failure before selecting replacements, whether that is a drainage issue, a species mismatch with the site conditions, or damage from road salt. When shrubs have simply outgrown their space, we assess whether pruning can restore them or whether replacement with a better-sized species makes more sense for the long term.
