Newly installed sod usually takes about 2-3 weeks to root well. During this time, keep the sod moist and avoid walking on it. After 2-3 weeks, you can gently pull on the grass to check if it has rooted. If you feel resistance, the sod has likely taken hold.
The best time for sod installation is during the growing season when temperatures are mild. In Northeast Wisconsin, late spring (after the last frost) and early fall are ideal. These times offer the best conditions for root growth, with cooler temperatures and usually more rain, which means less watering for you.
To care for newly installed sod, water it lightly but often to keep the soil damp but not soggy. Water 2-3 times daily for the first week, then slowly reduce how often you water. Stay off the grass for the first 2-3 weeks. Once the sod has rooted (after about 2-3 weeks), you can start regular mowing and fertilizing as your landscaper suggests.
